A cockroach! Eeeeek!!!
In my debut novel, IRS Special Agent Tara Holloway and DEA Agent Christina Marquez set up a stakeout in a former crack house. Let’s just say the house isn’t exactly home sweet home. Between cockroaches and a noisy family racoons, the place is a little crowded.
My favorite house I’ve ever lived in was a tiny, quaint house my husband and I lived in when we first got married. The place had been built long ago, before it was standard for every family to have a car, and it didn’t even have a driveway. No central air or heat either. We had to use space heaters and window unit air conditioners. No dishwasher. No washer-dryer hookups. But it had charm, coziness, and a large backyard that my ornery little Dachsund/terrier mix enjoyed chasing squirrels in.
The former tenant was a young guy with a Rottweiler. The place was a bit of a mess inside when we initially looked it over to rent, but the location was good and we figured once his broken-down futon and beer can collection were removed, the place would make a nice home for us. We later learned, from the many late-night visitors we received, that the former tenant was a drug dealer. Lovely.
At any rate, when we arrived with the U-Haul full of our furniture to move in, we were unexpectedly met by a welcoming commitee that numbered in the thousands. Unfortunately, our greeters were disgusting bugs who’d survived since prehistoric times and who waved their attenaes at us in challenge. Ew!!!
We ended up having to bug bomb the place before we could move in. The sight we faced when we entered the house after the pesticide settled was pure horror! It was also the inspiration for an icky but funny scene in Death, Taxes, and a French Manicure.
